April Eureka Journeyman

 April Eureka Journeyman

Study/Learn

In our endeavor to THRIVE in any situation, we are going to go over directions and how to use a compass.

1. Bring a compass to class.  We are going to do a compass course, and possibly create one depending on time.  We need 1 compass per 2 people (1 per person if possible).  If you happen to have more than that, please bring them.  If you don't have one, please borrow one, or buy one.  It's a great thing to have anyway, and now you'll have an idea of how to use it!  We will also need these on our campout.

Brother Martin will teach us how to use the compass at the beginning of class.  If you don't have one, you will be lost!  Haha, yes I just said that.

II.  Watch this video to help you understand true north vs. magnetic north.

Know/Understand

Knowing your direction in any given situation is important.  For example, if I'm going to visit the Eagars in Orem, I'm going to drive North.  I KNOW that.  Sometimes people give me directions using the Cardinal directions, which are North, South, East and West.  If I KNOW Orem is North, then I know how to find E, S and W.  That's good to know!  If you know 1 direction, you can know all 4 if you remember this:

If you ever find yourself in a survival situation, finding which direction is which is important.  Why?

We've talked about using the North Star at night to point us North.  What about during the day?  How can we find which direction is which using only the sun or other clues?  There are several ways actually.  Your assignment is:

Research 1 way you can find directions using the sun.  Try it out in your own yard!  Come to class prepared to explain your method.

Become/Serve:

Look up John 14:6 and memorize it.

Please Bring to Class: Your Book and your Pyraminx OR your 2X2 Rubix, whichever one you work on.

Study/Learn

I.

Option I. Continue learning to solve the pyraminx.  This video explains it so well.  Pull out your pyramids, and finish the entire solving process.  Come to class knowing how to solve it.

Option 2. Pull out your 2X2 cube, and learn how to solve it.  This is a good beginner video.

Be prepared to stand and solve 1 of these!  To those who haven't been keeping up with this because it seems intimidating, give it a try!  Everyone will stand with 1 group or the other.  The great thing about these videos, is that they give you a simple step-by-step method.  If you invest 20 minutes of time learning, then a few practice runs, you'll have it down.  You can do it!  Give your brain a good workout. :)

II.Gematria is a mathematical cypher used by Hebrews to study the Torah.  Watch this short video for a small sample of gematria.

III. Read chapters 11 and 12 ( pages 119-136) in The Glory of the Stars.  We did it! We finished this awesome book on constellations!

Fill in your constellation packet for Cancer and Leo, and their supporting constellations.
Find the 8 constellations you read about on pages 24-25 of the book, or any other star chart. Here is a good one online.

Know/Understand

I. Print out this Sky Map. This is your ticket into class.  Draw the lines for AT LEAST 10 constellations, and label them.  This is how the sky looks now!  It will be mostly the same in a couple weeks at our campout.  If you can recognize the ones you choose, our stargazing will be so much MORE FUN! The link I gave above for the Glory of the Stars assignment, will help if you'd like to use a resource.

II.  If you signed up to give a report this week (either from Glory of the Stars, or Ancient History), please come prepared to present a 5 (or so) minute presentation on your chapter.  Get together with your partner and talk about how you'd like to present together.  You can split it up, or work together however you want.

Matthew Chapter 2:
Now when Jesus was aborn in Bethlehem of Judæa in the days of Herod the king, behold, there came wise men from the east to Jerusalem,

Saying, aWhere is he that is born bKing of the Jews? for we have seen his cstar in the east, and are come to dworship him.

Search your scriptures, and find 1 sign (NOT the star of Bethlehem :)  in the sky that has been prophesied.  In class, we'll discuss what you find.  Be prepared to tell us if the sign has been fulfilled, or not.  How do you know?

February Eureka Journeyman

Should you give first aid like THIS??

First Aid is something that we can review over and over, and still learn from it!  Choose one of the topics on the this googe doc.  Study and Learn what first aid you would use in that situation.

Specifically learn:

1. How to avoid injury in the first place.

2. What you would do if you had medical assistance nearby.

3. What you would do if you DID NOT have medical assistance nearby.  As in, you are in the "middle of nowhere," like, say, Topaz Mountain.

4. What specific herbs, or other natural remedies (ex. clay, dirt, oils, etc) could you use to help heal your issue.

5. If you have any remedies, natural or otherwise, in your home already for the issue you have chosen, PLEASE bring them to share as part of your teaching.

6. Bring pictures and other props to teach us well.

Come to class prepared to teach!  If you want, you can get with the others studying the same topic, and work together.  If not, I'll give you time in class to discuss together before presentations.

Please Bring to Class: Your Book and your Pyraminx.

Study/Learn

I.  It's time to move on to solving the pyraminx.  This video explains it so well.  Pull out your pyramids, and follow along with him to minute 7:30.  After you learn how to solve 1 side, keep mixing it up to practice solving any side.  Solve 1 side of pyramid at least 5 times, so you get used to the right motions to solve it.  You can re-watch the video as often as you need.

II.Watch these videos about a few of our new notecard terms.  We will be playing a game in class with your knowledge.  Make a little note/doodle about each video in your CPB.

III. Read chapters 9 and 10 (pages 101-118) in The Glory of the Stars.  Fill in your constellation packet for Taurus and Gemini, and their supporting constellations.
Find the 8 constellations you read about on pages 24-25 of the book, or any other star chart. Here is a good one online.

Know/Understand

I. Choose 1 of the Following:

Option 1.  Solve this Krypto (Rules below)

 Here are 5 numbers: 7, 8, 9, 3, 2

                            Target # 237

New Rule:  You may use an exponent (any # you choose in addition to the 5 given #'s) on 1 of the 5 provided Numbers. This is not required.

Rules: Using each of the 5 numbers ONLY ONCE, you may use any combination of addition, subtraction, multiplication or division to manipulate the 5 numbers in any order to reach the target number.

Example: if you had the 5 numbers: "8,4,1,6,3", you could reach the target number of 11 by doing: 3 x 4 + 1 - (8 - 6)

There is always a way, usually more than 1, to reach the target number.

Use your commonplace book to record your trial and error. Record your equation and bring it to class!

Option 2
Create some type of Math ArtThe link will give you ideas.  This is totally open to your ideas and imagination.  Be creative, have fun. Bring it to class to share!

Option 3

Print out and complete this Rebus.  Write the answers for each puzzle.

Option 4

Print out and complete this Logic page.  Bring your completed work to class.

II.  Find Orion in the night sky.  He is one of the great winter constellations that are easy to spot. We won't study him until spring, but I'd like you to see him when he's so bright in the sky!  He looks like this:  Seriously, you can do this!!

The bright star on his right shoulder is called Betalguez (sounds like "beetle juice") and means: "the coming of the branch."  The 3 close stars, evenly spaced are his belt.  Then the 4 close stars hanging down, are part of his sword. He is now out just after dark.  He takes up a large part of the sky.  He's a fun constellation to see.

III.  If you signed up to give a report this week (either from Glory of the Stars, or Ancient History), please come prepared to present a 5 (or so) minute presentation on your chapter.  Get together with your partner and talk about how you'd like to present together.  You can split it up, or work together however you want. (Laws...you didn't have a chance to sign up, so if you'd like to click on the links to the google docs, you can choose a spot for this month, or any available openings for the rest of the year.)

Great work on writing your Psalms!  I've loved reading them.  I'm impressed with your insight and thoughtfulness.  I will post a few each month for you to read.  Here are a few for this month.  As you read each psalm written by one of your classmates, see if they resonate with what you believe.  I hope you all realize your amazing insight.  And the fact that you have great friends!

I want to gain knowledge that will help me give others joy and peace. I also want to gain knowledge that will help me grow.

He has that knowledge.

There is so much to learn, and oh how I wish I could know it all. The stars in the heavens prove to us that the possibilities are endless, for the stars go on for eternity.

EVERYTHING iS DETAIedL AND GOD PUT IT THERE FOR US. WE JUST HAVE TO BE WILLING TO LOOK AND SEE WHAT HE DOES FOR US.  THE STARS THE SKY THE ALL HAVE MEANING. WE KNOW THEY EXIST BUT WHAT DO THEY MEAN TO US? DO WE EVER LOOK AT THE SKY? AND SEE ITS BEAUTY? HEAVEN COULD BE UP THERE IT REALLY COULD.

I thrill to grab my Lord and hug Him close and tight, to also give my Heavenly Father a smile bright. I want to be as close to them as I can be, I want to know them well. I yearn to speak and learn with them and all their stories tell. But I am just dust on this earth and can't be yet as They. So I will ponder, think, and watch, and love, be light, and pray.

I ponder how the heavens came to be.  I cannot even fathom how they began,  how many worlds without end are beyond the stars.

The sky is mysterious and holds so many secrets. and I want to know them all. As the stars glow up above i wandered what it would be Like to be in the sky up there with all of the bright stars. I hope that i would know everything about them one day so I sat there under the night sky and watched as the Stars slowly sing me to sleep. When I woke up my mom came out to me ask what I wanted to eat breakfast and I said I'm coming to make something in a minute right now I still want to feel God's love for me.

On the fourth day, God chose to create something for his children to gaze and wonder at: the Heavens. We desire to learn about the Celestial because we see the majesty God made for us to discover.

The night sky is filled with the signs and stories of Christ, as we learn in Vanguard. My spirit cries ‘I wish to have Him tell me these stories in the stars’; alas, for now I must wait and watch and learn.

  • Isa

The heaven's are what make up the sky, stars, unavers, and our world as we know it.

The stars make up constellations that are beautiful to find in the night sky.

The constellations were made by god, he placed them one by one, he made sure we could find them, and enjoy them.

~billy

In the darkness so bright the shimmering stars awake at night made from every piece of light his love coming down for sight. We ask him for knowledge

WHILE SOME PREFER, THE DAY SO BRIGHT, IT IS THE STARS, THAT SHINE THROUGH THE NIGHT.

GOD’S GREAT CREATION,THE GREAT AND MIGHTY STARS, THOUGH WE CAN SEE THEM, THEY ARE OF A FAR.

the beautiful stars, burning red, blue, gold. Some of them may be thousands of years old.

Even the stars that we can’t see. Are everything God wanted them to be

Looking at the stars early in the night, is truly now one of my favorite sights.

While some see them and think they’re a bore, others are curious and want to know more.

January Eureka Journeyman

 January 2021

From the lovely Roxanna:

AHHHHHH!!!!! I’m so excited to teach a skill I have been blessed to use in a variety of settings… outside of midwifery.

Obviously, this one mini-class does not qualify you as an expert, but if you're ever up in the mountains or something when you have no option, you’ll be able to help 😊

It is meant to give you a basic understanding of the precautions we take when preparing to suture

Including handwashing

Universal precautions, what it means and why we do it.

Also the proper removal of soiled gloves.

We are planning on working on raw meat and would like to keep the raw meat 🥩 juices safely and neatly contained.

You guys are so awesome!

I am really looking forward to teaching this class.

And for any of you that might feel squeamish

You’re in good company, LOL

I used to pass out when I would see a person get sutures when I was first in school…

They were telling me to go lay down because I had lost all the color in my face

I’m happy to say, I’ve gotten over that.

And if you want to, so can you.

😊
