January Eureka Journeyman

 January 2021

From the lovely Roxanna:

AHHHHHH!!!!! I’m so excited to teach a skill I have been blessed to use in a variety of settings… outside of midwifery.

Obviously, this one mini-class does not qualify you as an expert, but if you're ever up in the mountains or something when you have no option, you’ll be able to help ๐Ÿ˜Š

It is meant to give you a basic understanding of the precautions we take when preparing to suture

Including handwashing

Universal precautions, what it means and why we do it.

Also the proper removal of soiled gloves.

We are planning on working on raw meat and would like to keep the raw meat ๐Ÿฅฉ juices safely and neatly contained.

You guys are so awesome!

I am really looking forward to teaching this class.

And for any of you that might feel squeamish

You’re in good company, LOL

I used to pass out when I would see a person get sutures when I was first in school…

They were telling me to go lay down because I had lost all the color in my face

I’m happy to say, I’ve gotten over that.

And if you want to, so can you.

๐Ÿ˜Š

January Eureka Apprentice

January Eureka Apprentice

Please Bring to Class: Your Rubix Cube AND your Pyraminx.

Study/Learn

I.  Technically speaking you should now be able to solve the Rubix Cube. Isn't it FUN!!  Go to This video  if you need a refresher on how to solve it.  Since we were on zoom for our last Eureka, we will have a final Rubix cube challange by age. So all 12-year-olds will compete against each other, and so on, up to 17/18.  So brush up on your skills!

No video for the pyrminx yet....just bring it so we can examine it together.  Easy Peasy.

II.Watch these videos about a few of our new notecard terms.  We will be doing a fun activity in class with these.  Make a little note/doodle about each video in your CPB.

Circle Stuff (abt 3 minutes)
More Circle Stuff (Pi) (abt 4 minutes)
Symmetry (2 minutes)
Conics (abt 5 minutes)

This water forms a parabolic curve. Have you seen parabolic curves in your surroundings?

III. Watch the Battle of the Wits. (Optional, but Greeky)  (Not Geeky.....Greeky)

IV. Read chapters 7 and 8 (pages 83-100) in The Glory of the Stars.  Fill in your constellation packet for Pisces and Aries, and their supporting constellations.
Glory of the Stars: A Study of the Zodiac
Add caption
Find the 8 constellations you read about on pages 24-25 of the book, or any other star chart. Here is a good one online.

Know/Understand

I. Choose 1 of the Following:

Option 1.  Solve this Krypto (Rules below)

 Here are 5 numbers: 7, 8, 9, 3, 2

                            Target # 195

New Rule:  You may use an exponent (any # you choose in addition to the 5 given #'s) on 1 of the 5 provided Numbers. This is not required.

Rules: Using each of the 5 numbers ONLY ONCE, you may use any combination of addition, subtraction, multiplication or division to manipulate the 5 numbers in any order to reach the target number.

Example: if you had the 5 numbers: "8,4,1,6,3", you could reach the target number of 11 by doing: 3 x 4 + 1 - (8 - 6)

There is always a way, usually more than 1, to reach the target number.

Use your commonplace book to record your trial and error. Record your equation and bring it to class!

Option 2
Create some type of Math Art. The link will give you ideas.  This is totally open to your ideas and imagination.  Be creative, have fun. Bring it to class to share!

Option 3

Print out and complete this picture using Symmetry.  Bring your finished product to class to share.

Option 4

Print out and complete this Animal Logic page.  Bring your completed work to class.

Option 5

Look up Roman Numerals.  Write the Roman Numerals up to 1000.  (Just write 1-20, 50, 100, 500, 1000.....not ALL the numbers in between.  Make sense?)  Bring your paper to class to share.

II.  Find Orion in the night sky.  He is one of the great winter constellations that are easy to spot. We won't study him until spring, but I'd like you to see him when he's so bright in the sky!  He looks like this:  Seriously, you can do this!!

The bright star on his right shoulder is called Betalguez (sounds like "beetle juice") and means: "the coming of the branch."  The 3 close stars, evenly spaced are his belt.  Then the 4 close stars hanging down, are part of his sword. He is now out just after dark.  He takes up a large part of the sky.  He's a fun constellation to see.

III.  If you signed up to give a report this week (either from Glory of the Stars, or Ancient History), please come prepared to present a 5 (or so) minute presentation on your chapter.  Get together with your partner and talk about how you'd like to present together.  You can split it up, or work together however you want. (Laws...you didn't have a chance to sign up, so if you'd like to click on the links to the google docs, you can choose a spot for this month, or any available openings for the rest of the year.)

We've been learning about the Greeks.  Their civilization was highly advanced and much of what they learned is what we use as a basis of our modern education.  How did they achieve this?  I think that those who accomplished so much were good at OBSERVATION. As a matter of fact, that is the same in today's world.  When we take the time to OBSERVE, and be still, our minds have chance to think big thoughts.  They (the Greeks)  took time to observe the Sky, Numbers, Commerce, Art, Music, Sports, Etc.  You can do the same.  So your assignment this week has to do with OBSERVATION.

I. Take some time to yourself to observe your natural surroundings. For AT LEAST 10 minutes.  Quiet your mind, find a quiet spot, and observe.  Look at the sky, watch the sunset, or go on a walk, etc. The "natural world" is outside, so observe something in nature.  You could use the time to pray if you wish.

II. Take time to observe one of your friends or family members.  Notice what they like to do, or what they like to eat.  Notice what they order at a drive-through, or what they do in their spare time.  Notice details!  Then take action!  Do something nice for them.  SERVE them based on your observation of what they like.  This is called ministering.  The Savior helps each of us in the way we need.  So your challenge is to help someone in the way they need.

Great work on writing your psalms!  I've loved reading them.  I'm impressed with your insight and thoughtfulness.  I will post a few each month for you to read.  Here are a few for this month:

The stars are glorious, each carefully placed to shine down on us from an ever-extending sky.

Constellations endless as the love of our Father who placed them there.

He loves us, so He gave us the glorious stars, which He finds almost as glorious as us.

Father, I feel so small in comparison to everything you’ve created; I’m no bigger than the specks of stars my eyes can see.

But I’m my own star in Your eyes, for I am beautifully and wonderfully made.

I want to learn as much as I can, so I can live with Jesus again!

I look up at the sky and think my God and Savior made this wonderful creation for me!

The stars are so beautiful and each tells a story!

One for every child of God!

I went up to the mountains and saw all of God’s creations including the stars and it was awe inspiring!!!

God is good.

I want to gain knowledge that will help me give others joy and peace. I also want to gain knowledge that will help me grow.

He has that knowledge.

There is so much to learn, and oh how I wish I could know it all. The stars in the heavens prove to us that the possibilities are endless, for the stars go on for eternity.

EVERYTHING iS DETAIedL AND GOD PUT IT THERE FOR US. WE JUST HAVE TO BE WILLING TO LOOK AND SEE WHAT HE DOES FOR US.  THE STARS THE SKY THE ALL HAVE MEANING. WE KNOW THEY EXIST BUT WHAT DO THEY MEAN TO US? DO WE EVER LOOK AT THE SKY? AND SEE ITS BEAUTY? HEAVEN COULD BE UP THERE IT REALLY COULD.
