Eureka Physics

I am so excited about physics!  I’m hoping to share what I learned in a fun and exciting way that will help you become knowledgeable about the things that God has created on this earth using the simple laws of physics.  Let’s do this!

Know/Understand:

(First of all, don't forget to write down your miracles each day.)  The world we live in is miraculous!

We are going to start with basics and have fun with it!

What is Physics? Physics is the study of how things move and behave in nature.

What are the laws of Physics? They are precise statements about how things behave.

Who made the laws of Physics? No one,  Scientists only discovered them!                                                  (Maybe God made the laws of physics)

How do you discover the laws of Physics? You make good observations!

All sciences start with the scientific method.

The starting point for the scientific method is an observation!

Another definition of physics:  Physics is a way of studying the things in the world around us.  Its name tells us that it is the science of looking at the PHYSICAL properties of things, studying the way things act because of things like their shape, size, energy and smoothness.

Watch this video About how cool physics is.  (Don't worry about the math, we are not doing a lot of math in this class.)

Watch this video about the first law of motion

Watch this video about the second law of motion

Watch this video about the third law of motion

Watch this video about gravity

Study/Learn:

1. In the Physics Book:  Skim through these sections, Pages 16-57. It's interesting!  I don't expect you to read all of this, just skim until something catches your attention.

Measurement and Motion: Physics and the everyday world
All is Number: Language of Physics
All Action has a reaction: Laws of Motion
The Frame of the System of the World: Laws of Gravity

                                                                                           A. Write down your favorite quotes that you find.  B. Choose one topic within these sections to expound on.  Read the sub section and come prepared to                          briefly teach us about it.                                                             (Each little sub section is color coded, so you will read all of that section.) I made a doc that shows each section in the same color that is in the book.  Sign up for a section by putting your name by one.    Physics Sign up

What goes
up,
must
come
down!

2.  Choose ONE experiment to do that has to do with motion, force or gravity.  Here are a few ideas.  You do not have to use these experiments, you can come up with your own. If you do your own, answer these questions.

  • What is your objective? (What is your experiment about?)
  • What is your Hypothesis? (What do you think will happen?)
  • What was your process? (How does it work?)
  • What are your observations? (What happened each time?)
  • What are your conclusions? (In the end, what was the final thing that happened?)

Falling Objects Experiment

Get to Work Experiment

It's the Law Experiment

A.  Do the experiment several times and make observations about what happened each time. The papers in the listed experiments make it easy to write down all of your observations.  Print them off and fill them out to make it really easy.

B.  Make a video of your experiment that you can show us.  It should be 2 minutes or less.  Make it fun!  Think of it like a quick commercial about your experiment.  You can do these experiments with a family member to make it more fun!

Become/Serve:

In your Book of Mormon you can find the scientific method!  It's in Alma.  You might know it as experiment upon the word.  Find the steps of the scientific method in Alma.  Vanbucks if you can show me the exact verses.

Part One: Scriptures about Money

  • Each student needs to find one scripture (or a scripture story) about money. Come prepared to share that scripture and what it means. Remember, there are over 2,000 scriptures about money in the Bible alone!

Eureka Masters Class

Watch the movie, "October Sky."

During the movie, there is an equation that Homer writes on the board.

1. Write down the equation that he uses to prove ____________? (I don't want to give anything away.)

2. What are the numbers that he uses in the equation?

3. If you can, solve the equation.

4. Who is your hero?  Write a letter to your hero or someone that you admire.  Tell them what you admire about them.

Vanbucks for each question that you answer.

We will be having some rocket fun!
