Acres of Diamonds is based on a lecture given by Russell H. Conwell. Conwell gave this same lecture over 6,000 times over a 60-year career. He used the proceeds from these lectures to help fund the education of 10,000 individuals at Temple University in Philadelphia.

This book is quick read - it is only about 60-pages long. Here are free links to the text and audio version:

As you read or listen, write down life lessons. Please come with at least 7 life lessons written down that you can share with others.

Eureka Personal Finance - February 23, 2023

Personal Finance February 23, 2023

  • Read The Richest Man in Babylon Chapter 3: Seven Cures for a Lean Purse
    • Make a note of the 7 cures and update them for your circumstances. In other words, how can you put each of these cures into place in your life right now?
      • Be prepared to discuss this in class.
    • Go through the remainder of the book and look for a quote, or main idea, from each chapter. Many versions have a quote, or main idea, at the end of the chapter. If yours does not, use this free online version: https://www.thediamondsmine.com/files/Ebooks/Clason-RichestManInBabylon.pdf
      • To give you an example, in Chapter 4: Meet the Goddess of Good Luck it has the following main idea at the end:
        • MEN OF ACTION ARE FAVORED BY THE GODDESS OF GOOD LUCK.
      • Note that not all chapters have this at the end - you just need to note the ones that do.
  • After our short discussion of the book, we are going to play a game that will teach you about budgeting, debt, passive income, and more. It is NOT Cashflow. You don’t need to bring anything - I’ll have it all ready to go.

Eureka - Personal Finance Jan 12, 2023

This week we are starting on a new book - The Richest Man in Babylon by George S, Clason.

The Richest Man in Babylon in one of the best selling personal finance books  - with millions of copies sold and shared. It was originally published in 1926, but the lessons taught are just as relevant today as they were in 1926. The book is a series of parables that teach personal finance lessons.

Here is the description from Amazon:

“The ancient Babylonians were the first people to discover the universal laws of prosperity. In his classic bestseller, ‘The Richest Man in Babylon,’ George S. Clason reveals their secrets for creating, growing, and preserving wealth.

“Through these entertaining tales of merchants, tradesmen, and herdsmen, you'll learn how to keep more out what you earn; get out of debt; put your money to work; attract good luck; choose wise investments; and safeguard a lasting fortune.”

For this week you just need to read two chapters:
  • Chapter 1: The Man Who Desired Gold
  • Chapter 2: The Richest Man in Babylon
In our class we will be discussing these two chapters. Be prepared to share some of the lessons you learned or quotes that you found inspiring.

In addition to these two chapters, we are also going to talk about the Habits of the Wealthy. For homework, research habits of the wealthy. You can do interviews with people who are wealthy or do research online. Come prepared with a list of habits and be prepared to share them with the group.

If we have time after these activities, we will play Cashflow, so please bring Cashflow if you own it.

Motion and Kinds of Energy

First, a review of Force and Friction

This is really just for fun!  It has a good explanation of friction. Be a kid again!

Study/Learn:  Types of Motion

1. Define each of these types of motion.  Write them down in your books.  They will be part of a Kahoot Quiz

Linear Motion
Projectile Motion
Parabolic Motion
Circular Motion

2. Watch these videos.  I realize that these might be confusing, but they are interesting.  Also, if you are planning on taking the ACT, it would be good to know these concepts.  Some questions for the Kahoot will come from each video.

3. Kinds of Energy

We have learned that energy is something that gives something else the ability to do work.  There are different kinds of energy.  We have learned about Kinetic and Potential Energy.  Now we are going to break those down.  This week we will do Potential Energy.

Potential Energy is stored Energy.

Watch this video about Potential Energy

4. Define these types of energy.  More Kahoot questions will come from this video and these definitions.

Chemical Energy
Elastic Energy
Nuclear Energy
Gravitational Energy

Stored energy does not just disappear, it is converted into moving energy,
or kinetic energy, which we will talk about next time.

Know/Understand:

1. Do an experiment that has to do with the 4 types of motion listed above, or a type of potential energy.

2. Make a Video of your experiment to show us what you did.  Explain your process and your results.  Make sure to upload it to the Vanguard Youtube Channel.

or

Come prepared to do your experiment in class.  Be prepared to explain your process and explain the results.

Whatever you decide, make it fun and engaging!  Also, you are welcome to do this with a sibling.

Here are a few ideas.  You can use these, or do your own.
