Eureka Master's Class Oct 20, 2022

Master's Class October 20, 2022

This week in Eureka master's class we are going to discuss Don't Tell Me I Can't: An Ambitious Homeschooler's Journey by Cole Summers.

It's a short read and it is not available on Audible, but you can get the e-book.

Cole wrote this book when he was 14-years old and after he had accomplished more than most adults. He had started two businesses, purchased a 350-acre farm, bought and renovated a house, and purchased a tractor. He had also developed a plan to save the desert water table.

Cole grew up in the Great Basin Desert Region of Utah. Tragically, Cole passed away this past summer when he drowned in the local reservoir.

Thankfully, Cole published his book before he passed away so he was able to share his journey and the lessons he learned along the way with all of us.

Come prepared to discuss the book - including your favorite story or quote, and something you learned (or something you want to learn more about).

Eureka Physics

AND POWER

In our last class we learned about Newtons laws of motion.  Who remembers what they are?

Know/Understand:
1. Define the words WORK, ENERGY, FORCE and POWER in terms of physics.  The videos below will help with that.  Don't worry if all of this sounds confusing, just see what you can learn from it.  Write down your definitions in your notebook.  Also, take some notes from the videos.  There will be a short kahoot quiz.
2. Watch this VIDEO
3. Watch this VIDEO
4. Choose an experiment to do about Work, Energy, Force or Power.  You can click on the links below and do one of these experiments, or find one of your own.  Make a video of your experiment to show us. Upload it to You-Tube.  You can use your own You-Tube or the Vanguard one. The instructions for that are in the tool box on the main vanguard page.

STUDY/LEARN:

1. Read (Skim) pages 66 -117 of the Physics book.
2. Choose one section that you would like to learn more about.
3. Sign up HERE
4. Come prepared to teach us about what you learned.  You can do this with siblings if you wish.  I want to give you more time than last time.  You will have 3-5 minutes to show us what you learned, so dig in.

Each section has a person or 2 that influenced the thing you are learning about.  Be sure to include some interesting facts about that person.  More importantly though, help us understand what you learned in a fun and interesting way.  Here are a few ideas.  Your presentation is not limited to these ideas.
BE CREATIVE.
Make a video
Do an experiment that has to do with your topic
Draw a picture about what you learned
Make a song about what you learned
Do a demonstration

BECOME/SERVE:

I found this lesson on the Church Website.  I loved it!  When it says to choose 2 activities, you only have to choose 1.
HERE is a link if you want to go directly to the lesson and be able to click on all the scripture links.

“Faith without Works Is Dead”

What do you think of people who say they believe in Jesus Christ and the gospel but do not act like they do? James taught that “faith without works is dead” (James 2:26). As Saints, we must show our faith by living the gospel. As you read James 1–2, look for teachings that give encouragement and help you live the gospel.

Studying the Scriptures

Do two of the following activities (A–C) as you study James 1–2.

  1. Scripture Mastery—James 1:5–6

Joseph Smith was only fourteen years old and confused about religion when he read from the book of James.

    1. Read James 1:5–8 and write the words or phrases that encourage you to look for direction from God.

    2. Read about Joseph Smith’s experience in Joseph Smith—History 1:10–13. Describe a situation in which you could receive help by exercising faith and asking God for wisdom.

  2. Write a Talk for Sacrament Meeting

Imagine you have been asked to speak in a sacrament meeting. Using what you learn from James 1:12–16, 22–27, outline a five-minute talk about how young people can better live the gospel.

  3. Scripture Mastery—James 2:17–18

Some religions teach that faith is all that is needed in order to be saved and that good works are not necessary. James taught differently. Read the letter below and write a response using the information found in James 2:14–26.

    Dear Friend,

I am afraid you are not Christian because you do not accept Jesus as your Savior. You believe that you need to do righteous works along with having faith to be accepted by God. You are deceived! Works are not necessary if you have faith and believe. The grace of Christ makes works nice, but unnecessary. Please turn from your errors, accept Christ, and do not rely on your works to save you. Only then can you have peace.

    Your friend in another church.

Eureka - Personal Finance Oct 20, 2022

NOTE: We are switching Eureka from October 27 to October 20.

Part I: Read Rich Dad, Poor Dad

Read the following chapters:
  • Chapter 2: Lesson 2: Why Teach Financial Literacy
  • Chapter 3: Lesson 3: Mind Your Own Business
  • Chapter 4: Lesson 4: The History of Taxes and the Power of Corporations
These chapters are from the newest edition of the book, but if you have an older book just find the chapters that have the same title.

We will be discussing these chapters in class.

 Part II: History of Money

Choose a topic from the following list of topics:

History of Money Topics

and prepare a 5-minute "presentation" about the topic. You can choose a partner to present with.

You can do any type of presentation, such as a standard presentation, or you can bake something, do a dance, paint something, make a model of something - really whatever you want as long as you teach about the topic!

Part III: Play CA$HFLOW the game

Play CA$HFLOW at home! Each time you play the game with your family you can get 5 VanBucks (up to 30 total).

I would prefer you play the physical game, but if your parents approve you can play the online game here. If you play the online game, make sure you take time in between turns to study your Financial Statements. You can actually set up a room with a password and play with others from Vanguard.

The game is made to teach you about financial statements, so if you skip that part you won't be learning what you need to learn (which is why I prefer you play the physical game.

    Eureka Physics

I am so excited about physics!  I’m hoping to share what I learned in a fun and exciting way that will help you become knowledgeable about the things that God has created on this earth using the simple laws of physics.  Let’s do this!

    Know/Understand:

(First of all, don't forget to write down your miracles each day.)  The world we live in is miraculous!

We are going to start with basics and have fun with it!

What is Physics? Physics is the study of how things move and behave in nature.

What are the laws of Physics? They are precise statements about how things behave.

Who made the laws of Physics? No one,  Scientists only discovered them!                                                  (Maybe God made the laws of physics)

How do you discover the laws of Physics? You make good observations!

All sciences start with the scientific method.

The starting point for the scientific method is an observation!

Another definition of physics:  Physics is a way of studying the things in the world around us.  Its name tells us that it is the science of looking at the PHYSICAL properties of things, studying the way things act because of things like their shape, size, energy and smoothness.

Watch this video About how cool physics is.  (Don't worry about the math, we are not doing a lot of math in this class.)

Watch this video about the first law of motion

Watch this video about the second law of motion

Watch this video about the third law of motion

    Watch this video about gravity

    Study/Learn:

    1. In the Physics Book:  Skim through these sections, Pages 16-57. It's interesting!  I don't expect you to read all of this, just skim until something catches your attention.

Measurement and Motion: Physics and the everyday world
All is Number: Language of Physics
All Action has a reaction: Laws of Motion
The Frame of the System of the World: Laws of Gravity

                                                                                               A. Write down your favorite quotes that you find.  B. Choose one topic within these sections to expound on.  Read the sub section and come prepared to                          briefly teach us about it.                                                             (Each little sub section is color coded, so you will read all of that section.) I made a doc that shows each section in the same color that is in the book.  Sign up for a section by putting your name by one.    Physics Sign up

    What goes
    up,
    must
    come
    down!

    2.  Choose ONE experiment to do that has to do with motion, force or gravity.  Here are a few ideas.  You do not have to use these experiments, you can come up with your own. If you do your own, answer these questions.

    • What is your objective? (What is your experiment about?)
    • What is your Hypothesis? (What do you think will happen?)
    • What was your process? (How does it work?)
    • What are your observations? (What happened each time?)
    • What are your conclusions? (In the end, what was the final thing that happened?)

    Falling Objects Experiment

    Get to Work Experiment

    It's the Law Experiment

    A.  Do the experiment several times and make observations about what happened each time. The papers in the listed experiments make it easy to write down all of your observations.  Print them off and fill them out to make it really easy.

    B.  Make a video of your experiment that you can show us.  It should be 2 minutes or less.  Make it fun!  Think of it like a quick commercial about your experiment.  You can do these experiments with a family member to make it more fun!

    Become/Serve:

In your Book of Mormon you can find the scientific method!  It's in Alma.  You might know it as experiment upon the word.  Find the steps of the scientific method in Alma.  Vanbucks if you can show me the exact verses.

    Eureka Apprentice Week 6

     Eureka Apprentice Week 6

Don't forget to study "The Living Christ."

    Study/Learn:

    --Brain Work--

Here's my last shot at helping you understand WHY memorization is so important.

    1. Memorization is Discipline for the Mind. It will train your mind to focus and be industrious.

    2. No, You can't always "google it." What if you have no internet? What if it's not on the internet..(gasp,) or what if you want to have a good debate on the fly, or actually want to be an expert at something?

    3. Memorization creates the repertoire of what we think about.  Elder Scott says memorizing a scripture is like making a faithful new friend: “Great power can come from memorizing scriptures. To memorize a scripture is to forge a new friendship. It is like discovering a new individual who can help in time of need, give inspiration and comfort, and be a source of motivation for needed change.”

    4. The more you remember, the more you can learn.  Your memory is like a muscle in that the more you train it, the stronger it gets and more you can store.

Who's with me? Text Me, Sister Martin, 719-494-7522, Which one of these 4 reasons is the best motivation for you?  Yes, this is a 1 minute assignment.

    --Marine Biology--

STOP!!!!!! Before you scroll any more, answer these questions.

What type of animal do you think this is?

What do you notice about its skin?

How many different kinds of animals can you think of that have skin similar to this?

    --Marine Reptiles and Marine Birds--

    1. Sea turtles are reptiles. Reptiles usually have scaly skin, lay eggs on land, and are cold-blooded. Unlike fish, they have lungs and breathe air. Sea turtles cannot breathe underwater, but they can hold their breath for several hours!

    2. 1. Go to pages 71-75 in the curriculum (or on the thumbnails on the side pages 85-89. I just found out from Alex that the other page numbers were confusing!). Read about the Marine Reptiles.

    3. 2. Watch this video about Marine Reptiles

    4. 3. Go to page 77, (or 91) and read about Marine Organism Adaptations.  The instructions say to choose 1 animal and tell a family member about it.  I want you to do that, but you will tell me about it. You may have to look up additional facts!

    5. Send me 1 question for the kahoot about your organism.  The first 3 to send me questions will get vanbucks!  801-901-3610 or tasha.eagar@gmail.com

    6. (Also, if you have siblings in vanguard, please choose different organisms so we can try to cover them all.)

A bird’s beak is essential to its survival. It is the tool a bird uses for obtaining food, shelter, and water. Marine birds’ beaks are specially designed for life in the ocean environment. A marine bird includes any bird that spends most of its life near the ocean. It is commonly called a seabird. Most seabirds have webbed feet.

    1. Marine birds are unique because they do not require fresh water to drink. They are able to get rid of unnecessary salts in their bodies to keep them in balance. Marine birds are divided into five main groups.

    2. 4. Print out pages 122-124 (or 136-138) Read about each main group and sort the birds into the groups.

    3. 5. Watch this video about  Marine Birds

    4. Remember to take notes on all the things for the kahoot!

    --Logic--

     Solve ONE of these puzzles.
For extra vanbucks you can solve all of them.

     Futoshiki

    Cross Sum

    Sudoku

    Kakuro

    Armada

    --Exploration--

Check out the video about the Suez Canal. This is a canal that Mr. Fogg used when traveling around the world.  It is key to international shipping. Circle in on your world explorations map, and label it on your key, along with the dates of it's building.

--Around the World in 80 Days--

    6. Week 6: Finish the Book! Does he make it?

    • Add all travels to your "Around the World" travel log.
    • Chart his journey to your "Around the World" travel map.

    Know/Understand:

    1.  Ocean Animal Report:  This week I want you to study one ocean animal that you think has the Best Defense Mechanism(s) You can use a real animal, a made up one, or a mythical creature.  To prepare for this you will need to do these things.

    • Find an ocean animal to study that has the BEST DEFENSE MECHANISM!
    • Print a picture of your animal and bring it to add to our ocean wall. (No pictures on phones! Physical pictures please!)
    • Learn what ocean it is found in.
    • Tell us what Pelagic Zone or Intertidal Zone it is found in.
    • Tell us what classification of Marine Life it is. (you can find stuff on classification on pages 32-33 in the curriculum, or obviously online.)
    • Convince your fellow vanguardians why your choice is the best. (We will break into groups to do this.)
    • You will get 2 minutes to tell us all about your animal, so keep it short, sweet, and convincing!

    2. Where in the World is
    Napoleon Narwhal
Using a Globe, or a map. No Device this week! Look up THE LAST latitude/longitude point.  This week our explorer was found in only body of water. Remember to label it with your name.

    A: 41.10, -112.46

    3. Memorize 3 out of these 4 important facts in your life. Start with ones you don't already know. If you know them all, do quick review, and then you're done!

    • Your address, including zip code
    • Your social security number
    • 3 phone numbers you should know (ex. someone you could call in an emergency)
    • The last 2 pages of the Living Christ! Starting with "He will rule as King of Kings."

    Become/Serve:

For our last voyage this year, you have a choice:

    EITHER

Talk to your parents or look on your familysearch.org account (or the app), and find one of your ancestors who made a voyage over water.  This could be someone as far back as the Mayflower!  Or someone who sailed from England to be with the Saints, or someone who sailed on the Brooklyn from New York, or the Race Horse from South Africa, or any other water voyage.

    • Chart their voyage on your scripture voyages map
    • Find a story about their trip
    OR

Learn about the fantastic story of the Brooklyn.

Have you heard of a boat called the Brooklyn?  Read this story from the July 1997 Ensign.  You can read or listen

    • Use the map in the article to chart their route on your Scripture Journeys Map.
    • As you read (or listen), write down 3 ways the saints showed Self Control.
No matter which one you chose: Write down at least 1 way you can show more self-control in your own life. Are you gonna do it?  That is totally up to YOU, with God's help!
