Eureka September 2018

Welcome to a new, amazing year of Eureka...where the world falls apart...
a few times...
and gets rebuilt.

Where we wow each other with thrills of advancement and technology, show our math and logic prowess, and get swept away in tales of madness, love and history from the periodic table of elements.

It's going to be epic!

To ease into things, we are going to jump right in.  Summer break is over!


We get to learn Chemistry together!  Chemistry is the science that studies chemicals.  Chemicals are everywhere.  Everything we eat, breathe, drink, and live with is made of chemicals. All other sciences have ties to chemistry.

Chemistry as a science essentially started with alchemists who tried in vain to transform everything imaginable into gold.  If they had succeeded, our world might be quite different.

Alas, they did not, but they did experiment and study, a lot!  We will do the same, and we will learn a wealth of information from their studies.

We are going to use Chemistry for Every Kid.  Don't worry.  I know this is super basic.  I'm not trying to insult your intelligence.  But it contains good hands-on activities to do at home to get you thinking about important concepts.  We will go into much more depth in class.

Study/Learn

I. Read the introduction to Chemistry for Every Kid, pages xvii-xx.

II. Perform 4 experiments from this book.
Choose any 2 exp. from Chapter 1, Matter
Choose any 2 exp. from Chapter 3, Gases.

Record in your commonplace book what you learned from each experiment.

III. Use index cards to create these Notecards (Hint, many of these are answered in the following videos, but you may also look them up if desired)

V.  I know many of you are "times table ninjas" already (meaning you have immediate recall of times tables from 1-12), but if you're not, you'll be there by the end of this year.

If you need to work on times tables you are a Ninja in Training.  Your inspirement is to practice the times tables you need to work on most.  Only you know what those are. Spend 3 sessions of 10 minutes each working on them.  You can choose how to do this.  Here are some options:

*Have someone quiz you with flashcards
*Play multiplication war with a sibling, parent, or friend.
*Use a game or app that quizzes you
*Sing some skip counting songs and practice skip counting

Drill and practice is key.


If you have immediate recall of all times tables from 1-12 you are a Ninja Master.  You will be officially elevated to Ninja Master status in class by proving your math prowess.  Your inspirement is to think of your best advice or trick for learning multiplication, and bring it to class to share.

Teach the whole class how you would want to be taught! These are large topic areas. It is your job to pull the most interesting things to YOU and share them in an informitive, concise, fascinating manner.	Name

Know/Understand

I. Click on this link of the periodic table, and play with the periodic table for a few minutes.  Do any of the elements sound familiar to you?

Memorize all the elements and their two-letter symbols from the Noble Gases and Hydrogen (that's only 7 elements, people!)  We will review them in class.

Choose 1 element from this group to study in depth.  Come up with at least 3 new facts about your element that are not listed on the table.

When was it discovered, who was it discovered by?
How was it discovered?
How did it get it's current purpose in todays society?
Was there any dramatic story surrounding your element (believe me, there is lots of drama in chemistry!)?
How has is been used throughout history?
Etc....

II. Listen to this slightly annoying song.  Anyone who memorizes the entire table by the end of April will receive a super cool, super nerdy chemistry award!

III. Choose ONE of these options:

1.  Make a few more note cards:

Electron

Atom

2. Make a 3-D model of an atom of a specific element on the periodic table using any materials you like.

3.  Draw or paint a picture of a specific atom from the periodic table.

4. Bring a demonstration of how atoms work.

5. Write an interesting story about atoms and how they work.

Bring your work to class to show!

IV.  Game time!  Battleship Rules:

Create 3 ships on your battlefield by circling them with a dry-erase marker.  Each ship will be a different size:
1 3-element ship,
1 4-element ship, and
1 5-element ship.

Get with someone in Vanguard and play battleship.  This can be in your home or over the phone (talking or texting).  Try to sink your opponents ships before they sink yours.

Notice that Elements 112-118 on different on each periodic table.  Does anyone know why?  We'll talk about it in class.  But you can still play Battleship with those elements because the Atomic Numbers are the same!

V. Logic Training.

Complete at least 3 pages of your Balance Math & More Workbook.  You can do more.

Why would you do more? 

There will be an award for everyone who comes to me with 40 completed logic pages by the last Eureka class in April.  These can include the pages of your Balance Book, and the other logic games I post.  I will need to see the entire stack of completed work.

Have something to show us, don't just read from your notebook.

Spend 10 minutes adding and subtracting with the abacus.  Find someone to say the problems out loud to you.  You can give them one of your past abacus worksheets to use.  Practice with single digits and double digits.  

If you can multiply on the abacus, practice that, too.

II. Play N2K with yourself or your family for 10 minutes. 

N2K...If you need to remember the game, rewatch National Number Knockout. Watch the Rules Here.  Add up your points, so you are ready to score your games at vanguard.

III.  If you did NOT bring an invention to class in

April Eureka Masters

Welcome to Eureka Masters

The UM is fascinating!  I'm excited to discuss these principles with our Master Achievers.
The principles in the book DO NOT have to be read in Order for understanding.  If you haven't done previous reading, you can just jump in.  Previous knowledge helps, but each idea is somewhat isolated from the others.

OR, You may read Peter Pan, and be admitted into masters! :)


This Chapter is exciting!  I've been wanting to get to it all year.  What do you know about the flood, and how it has affected our planet?  There is evidence everywhere.

If the UM seems overwhelming, and you feel like you shouldn't come, because you're "behind," THINK AGAIN!  A lot of people who read this book start in chapter 8, because it's fascinating.  You don't have to have read anything before this!


Skim the 1st half of Chapter 8.  Pages 475-5.95. Yes, it's a lot, but just skim.  Look at the interesting pictures, read a little, just skim. This should only take about 20 minutes.

After skimming, choose 1 section of chapter 8 to read with greater understanding.  Come to class ready to teach something about the about the section you read.  There is a lot in each section - you don't need to cover it all, just choose what interests you the most from your section. You'll have 2-5 minutes to present.  Think of a creative way to present.  For example:

Do an experiment from the book, or one of your own
Make up a song
Make a posterboard
Create an object lesson, or use the ones he gives in the book
Come up with some fun puns
You get the idea....make it fun!  Share the excitement of new discovery!

The Lord God is the fountain of all righteousness! His love is a fountain of living waters, it runs pure and deep. Now wit the UM we can understand just how deep a fountain can be! This fountain of life is able to cleanse us, able to heal us, and able to satisfy us like nothing else can.   When the earth had become so corrupt with sin, it was fountains of living water that came with power to cleanse and heal it. 

Each one of us are thirsty, there is nothing in this world that can satisfy our thirst like the Love of God. All of us are corrupt with sin, and there is nothing in this world that can cleanse us, we need the cleansing power of The Fountain of All Righteousness. We are wounded and we need Living Waters in order to heal.

I imagine this Fountain of Living Water is bursting with great force, overflowing with love for us, like the flood video. I'm so grateful for our Savior Jesus Christ, all creation testifies of His love for you!

March Eureka Journeyman

Hi Everybody! I hope you are all going to join me for this weeks economics class.

Study/Learn

Do all of the following:

- Read chapters 13 & 14 in Whatever Happened to Penny Candy
- Watch these videos on the federal debt. Video # 1 Video # 2   I know some of you don't like the Crash Course guy. The first video is him but the second one isn't. If you honestly just don't want to watch him or have another reason for not watching the videos, then just spend fifteen minutes researching the federal debt someplace else.
- Check your stocks.  Email me the current price. If you have not bought stocks yet or have any questions email me at taraannefontano@gmail.com  Remember, you have to sell your stock by the last Eureka class. Make sure you are watching prices so you can get the best deals.

Know/Understand

Choose one of the following to do:

- Prepare a one minute show and tell on your favorite thing you've have learned in class this year. This has to include something to show and something to tell. Don't bore us ;)

- Write a song or poem about economics. Come prepared to present it.

- Come prepared to act like an old geezer who must explain to the class why back in his day candy only cost a penny. Costumes and funny voices will be appreciated, but make sure you know your facts.

- Write a minimum of one paragraph about the federal debt and whether or not you think it is a threat. Be prepared to share your thoughts.

-Write an acrostic poem using the word Economics that demonstrates something you learned this year. Bring it to class.

- 1 Timothy 6:10 says that, The love of money is the root of all evil. Do you agree? Why or why not? Journal about it or share your thoughts with someone else. Come prepared to share with us.

All Students: Watch this video, write down the problem on paper that she gives, and solve this problem with the video.  It will help your skillzzz immensely!

Beginner Abacus Students: 


Finish filling out out worksheet #4 from this PDF File.   It should be the other 1/2 the worksheet.

Intermediate Abacus Students: Here is a link to 2nd level abacus worksheets.  Print and complete at least 1/2 of worksheet #5. Work on 10 problems from each row.

To continue our multiplying, solve each of these problems.  Let's just focus on a large number multiplied by a 1 digit number, so we can master that skill.  Write the answers you got on your abacus in your commonplace book.

II.  This may seem a little random, but watch this 2 minute video about Mt Kilimanjaro.  We will have a guest speaker coming who just got back from climbing it!

On these cards, notice how some of the definitions are different from what the UM says.  If you're not taking the UM class, just realize that some of these definitions are THEORIES, not facts.

V.  Elon Musk is a modern day inventor.  He is launching rockets NOT through NASA, through his own private company.  The rocket boosters are recoverable, which is a 1st in rocket history!  This is like Iron Man! Watch this Video.

VI. Solve 2 of these logic puzzles (there are 4 total).  Bring your answers to class!

VII. Create another invention, like we talked about in class.  I love to see all your ideas! If you'd like to make some type of sun oven or rocket stove, there are lots of ideas online.  You can even copy mine...I got the idea online.  It can be original, that's even better.  

If you have an idea for a great invention, but not the resources to make it, bring the blue prints, or a prototype (a smaller version of the real thing), and tell us about it. 

Remember Leonardo DaVinci invented ideas that never really came to life until a later date. We know about them because of his detailed drawings.

Most of all, make sure your invention creates a Functional Purpose.  Follow the ideas given to you by the spirit.  It also helps if it's something you love!

If you've already started on an invention, work on it, or do something to improve it or make it better.

Bring your invention to Eureka.  Be prepared to take a minute or two to explain to the class how it works. Demonstrations make it fun!  If it's too big to bring to class, bring a video!

Read or Listen to the conference talk: Gathering the Family of God by President Eyring.  

How will your your invention bless those around you?  Spend 5 minutes journaling your answer.
